Thanks to everyone, especially DJ, who sent or posted comments. With that and more reading of docs I found a working combination. Since other people posted similar questions, I am posting a summary. I have a Vesa Local Bus Genoa SVGA controller using Cirrus chips. I have no idea how relevant these comments are to other configurations. go32: version 1.11 maintenace level 4 version 1.10 was the original cause of my problem libgrx: version 1.03 maintenance level 1 libgr did not work above about 310x200 pixels. set go32=driver \djgpp\contrib\libgrx\ndrivers\vesadrv.vdr gw 800 gh 600 nc 256 default driver did not work above 640x480 pixels.
