The real problem is that the typical e-mail reader is not as effective at handling large numbers of messages as the typical newsreader. Make a mail reader that separates topics into groups, based on mailing list (if any), and that displays the messages and allows people to select only the ones they want to read (ala nn or trn), and the problem goes away.
