I actually built the 2.03 refresh with GCC 2.8.1 (just like the original version) - with the "fixed" binutils assembler. I've considered making a "refreshed" 2.8.1 or 2.7.2 available, since the code generated is significantly smaller than the 2.9 or 3.x versions.
