Bash is from Mark's site, compiled with week's old CVS libc.
Emacs is latest released binary from simtel.net.

I reported this one back in June. Mark replied that he does not
know emacs. Eli, maybe you could tell which syscall (or several ones)
could be failing to give us a hint?
