Not necessarily: BIOS tty functions support color. (Let me know if you want more details about this.) So this is basically a design decision. One disadvantage of conio is its large footprint which you might want to avoid, given that tminit.c already has an alternative implementation of many conio features. An obvious disadvantage of going through BIOS is the speed, but since termios already uses BIOS, that's not an issue, I think.
