Can UPX-compressed programs with debug information be debugged using gdb? Can you get a traceback using symify? Or handled using other binutils programs? Does the UPX stub cause problems like PMODE/DJ does? If all these work OK with UPX, then IMHO it sounds like a good plan to use UPX.
