Did you test it on a win95 box ? because it seems never to happen on a NT box ! (maybe it is really 95 specific !) Furthermore it could well be that the amount of stabs code generated is a little different if we use different GCC versions for instance and that thus there is no alignment space generated in your case. I was even able to generate such alignments with different patterns with only one C source compiled with stabs info.
