You're taling about the `which' shell locate command ?

There is :
`type -path' 

# type -path gcc
/usr/local/gcc

The cons is that it does not do aliases
# alias
alias cp='cp -i'
alias ls='ls -F'
alias mv='mv -i'
# type -path ls
# type -all ls
ls is aliased to `ls -F'
ls is /usr/bin/ls
