What exactly > required you to set CC? > The problem appeared when I ran the script from plain DOS. The script quit because it said it couldn't find a working C compiler and beside gcc it had 'no'. But when I ran the script again today from plain DOS (minus my CC setting), the problem didn't appear and gcc was detected. I was using a version of Bash 2.03 that had a problem searching paths which I later found, so that was the likely source of the problem.
