Is there a simple test > case that demonstrates the problem the patch works around? > Yes. running unpatched autoheader in gcc main directory in DOS session under Win95 (needed for 'make cstamp-h.in') for both gcc-2.8.1 and egcs-1.1.1. autoheader tries to rename file where autoheader output is being written. This does not work under Win95 unless file is closed before. Also: are You going to also include autoscan (needs PERL, therefore I included definition of ac_cv_path_PERL) which was not in acnf212b.zip. Also manipulations on $PATH was left in posted script by mistake (it's was one harmless but unsuccessfull test) Andris
