Just for the record: there really is a virus (it's called CIH or GIH) that does flash BIOS *and* overwrite the first MByte or so of the harddrive. It became famous for being the first one where you actually had to open your machine's case to bring it to life again after this virus struck. In the worst of all cases (Laptop, BIOS in a non-flash, non-socket-mounted EPROM) you may actually be best off buying a new machine.
