I have a new version of TeX ported to DJGPP which waits to be tested, and typesetting large documents is the best way. BTW, how exactly did it ``fail miserably''? Missing font is not a good reason for failures. Usually TeX generates missing fonts on-the-fly. Did you remember to DTOU the .txi files first?
