I spent an hour wading through the impossibly tangled code that parses Makefiles and was quite sure it has nothing to do with the DOS-specific parts. Now I am *totally* sure: I got a patch from Paul D. Smith who maintains Make, saying that he reproduced the same problem on Unix. His patch works. I will upload a patched version of Make ASAP, possibly today.
