Running configure is a lot, but not everything. I need to go through the program sources looking for things that break on MSDOS (such as the assumption that all absolute filenames begin with a '/', or that `read' always returns the same value as the size returned by `stat') and fix them. The larger the program and the less I'm familiar with its internals, the harder this part is. Anyway, thanks for replying.
