   It is not right IMHO that `_set_screen_lines' has a side effect of turning
   on the bright background colors.  The code is mine; I pulled it off some
   program I wrote and neglected to take those fragments out.

I'll second that but it would make sense to have libc functions
to turn bright backgrounds on and off.
