The real reason why bash crashed remains unclear (I was no more able to reproduce crashes). Successfully built gcc-4.2.2 using DJGPP v2.04pre. With 2.03r2 there are much more problems related by obsolete binary packages which are incompatible with WinXP ( I did not copy installation to the new computer but installed from scratch).
