No joy, 32bpp doesn't work either. Is there a painless way to port an Allegro app to DirectX? (Note: painless means, among other thigns, no massive rewriting and no paying money for anything. Preferably no downloading anything really huge, either. A DLL, maybe. Lots of new tools or libraries and having to learn them all, ick.)
