I did confuse you with someone else.  When you said you had timed
it I made assumptions. I don't want to do anything special to
compiler systems, I want this to work out of the box. But it looks
like this is a work around.  For now I am doing the thrashing with
VC6, which avoids the problem (until data gets big enough to make
the virtual memory thrash, at about 1.4 M entries on my 65M
system).
