Please do not toppost.

The only remotely similar reference in the FAQ is:

and nothing similar exists in readme.1st.  It looks as if you have
gotten some sort of hacked distribution.

You DO have a '~' character.  You just haven't found the
appropriate key on your keyboard yet :-)  Go looking, you will
need it, especially in C.
