Just for a quick reference point -- the gcc version I was using was 2.81, and most of the binaries date from the fall of '98. I don't know how much might have changed. Also, unless you are interested in MC as a project, as I was, as noted on the web site, there are both much smaller and faster implementations (Volkov Commander) and ones with many more bells and whistles like transparent net access (WindowsCommander). Have fun. The curses version is rather a dead end. Miguel de Icaza, the maintainer, has went on to bigger and better things. Even when i was working with it, his interest was primarily in getting it going in Gnome.
