I'm working on a file compression program that needs to calculate the
amount of time it takes to perform the compression.  I'm well aware of
the various time functions (yes, I've read the documentation on them).
My problem is slightly more complex than figuring out which function to
use.

I've noticed that when I run the compression program, the system clock
slows down.  This throws off my calculations.  Any idea why this
slowdown would happen?  Are there time function calls that will get
around this, or is there a way to eliminate the slowdown?
