Rebuilding under Windows will change nothing.  It looks like
Windows/ME changed something about the handle redirection.  Someone
will have to step into the relevant library functions (such as `dup'
and `dup2') and see what happens there on ME.  Unless the reason for
this is well understood, we cannot hope to fix it.

Btw, was this tested with the official release of ME, or some beta?
