    Solution found !

        With the help of Salvador, Elie and Gauthier.

        My version of Windows98se in French has the two files "keybd2.sys"
and "keyboard.sys" in C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ . Autoexec.bat is set to the first
one by installation and changing that to "keyboard.sys" corrected the
behavior of DOS and all programs running under it. It was that simple...

    Again, thank to all who helped.
