DJGPP is used to write large programs. Or at least that's when you can
get the max. out of a compiler like this. There are several reasons
for the large size. They are all in the FAQ and workarounds are also
mentioned there.

And yes, you could use UPX to compress the EXE (http://upx.tsx.org).
