I do this, but it only really works if the sources and objects are all
in the same directory as the Makefile:

%.o : %.c (or whatever rule)
	gcc -MMD ...

DEPS=$(wildcard *.d)
ifneq ($(DEPS),)
include $(DEPS)
endif
