A thanks to all who responded.  The reason I posted to the group
instead of filing a bug-report with the GCC team was because a search
of Deja news didn't turn up any messages stating similar problems with
djgpp.  This, and the prior knowledge that my system is suspect,
prompted my post.  In summation, it looks like I had better start
saving money towards a system upgrade.
