These things depend very much on the printer.

One way to do such things in DOS programs is to create a PostScript
file and then use Ghostscript to print it.

With PostScript you can easily draw lines and circles, change fonts,
etc.  It's a postfix language (as its name suggests), but don't let
that put you off - it's one of my favourite programming languages.
