Details, please.  What kind of hook do you have in mind?

If you are talking about the Filesystem Extensions (as would be my
best guess), you can find a working example in Fileutils (file
ls-msdos.c) and in Texinfo (file pcterm.c).  The former shows how to
extend output functionality, while the latter deals with input.
