The fact that GCC 2.8.1 is used has nothing to do with the problem at 
hand.

Upgrading to GCC 2.95.2 requires other packages to be upgraded as well 
(which you didn't mention), so IMHO it should only be recommended if no 
other feasible way of solving the problem exists.
