Perhaps I am wrong, but with the newer linux kernels (2.2.x) one has the ability to execute MISC binaries. From what I have read it appears one can associate a file/executable with the proper loader (java class files with a jvm, etc). No, I have never done it myself, nor have I thoroughly searched to see how this is done, but I know it does not depend on X or a window manager (though they also give similar abilites).
