Yes.  It's a big library.  How long do _you_ think it should
take for a good optimizing compiler such as GCC to crunch
multimegabytes of source?

Is your hard drive thrashing when trying to compile in pure DOS?
If so, press Ctrl+C to pause the make and run
  C:\DJGPP\ALLEGRO>smartdrv c+
to start a disk cache.  Then resume the build:
  C:\DJGPP\ALLEGRO>make

GCC is a lot faster on Linux, with its smarter disk cache.
