You forgot this from inside the bowels of libc:

Because everything but main() is huge, sizes of noddy programs
(hello world, Allegro bmp viewer, etc.) are irrelevant.

It'll strip debugging symbols from and compress executable files;
they can be used compressed as if they were not compressed.
