Originally, the 'V' bit signified Volume names (the ones you can change with the 'label' command, or at formatting time --- you'll find one in the root directory). Later, M$ seems to have hijacked the bit for LFN purposes. For practically every purpose, you can just ignore all directory entries with the 'V' bit set.
