Also the EMM386 or other expanded memory managers. Expanded memory is
still required especially by dos games. 

Actually this new "feature" of sindows98 autoloading himem.sys ifshelp.sys
etc proved to be another *&#@ing annoyance when I had to free up about
600K of free base memory to run a old dos game. I was unable to because
although my config.sys didn't have any reference, sin98 was "autoloading"
ifshelp, dblbuffer.sys (which is not required, I don't know what made M$
think dblbuffer is needed on my UDMA/IDE drive) etc..


I think it is pretty pathetic that windows needs himem.sys in order to
run. Why should a 32bit OS with so called "preemptive multitasking" need a
dos16bit
memory manager???? They even have the nerve to say that "himem.sys forms
the cornerstone of windows memory management". So a bug in himem.sys and
you probably can kiss all your 32bit programs goodbye ;-)

Even CWSDPMI doesn't need himem.sys to run 32bit apps. It can use the 
386's native mode.

Actually since most current CD-ROM's are IDE compatible (thank heavens!),
a generic driver should suffice in most cases. Like the generic driver
(OAK cdrom driver IIRC)that microsnoft windows98 setup loads when you boot
from the cd-rom.
