I usually don't use software with install/setup programs, too. There's a little story; I use ActiveSTATE's Perl to run my perl-scripts locally. After you have downloaded the Setup-File and you want to start it, you get a message that the Setup-Program could hang under unknown circumstances. I wrote a mail to ActiveSTATE, where I asked for a version of their Perl distribution without a Setup-Program and only as an Zip-File. They said, that they won't do that.
