That is true, but the actual protocol interface (SMTP, POP, NNTP,
etc.) is not part of Emacs.  Emacs simply talks to external programs,
passing them the messages to send and receiving from them the incoming
mail or news.  For example, to send a mail message, Emacs invokes the
Unix-standard program `sendmail' and passes it the text of the message
and the headers.  (The details are slightly different for dial-in
connections, but the principle is the same.)
