Your Watcom code is probably using some other way to detect the
retrace, perhaps just reading the VGA hardware registers directly
(in which case it won't work on some modern cards that don't have
those registers).

Allegro has a lot of different graphics drivers. Try them all:
if one doesn't work, there is a good chance that another one
will. This is what the config file is for.
