   I am evaluating various methods of porting an existing Unix based
   application to NT. It seems, from preliminary investigations, that DJGPP
   only supports the old DOS 8.3 filename. I would be grateful if you could
   clarify  the situation.

The DJGPP FAQ clarifies it in section 3.3: Windows/NT doesn't include
the special API that allows DOS programs to access long file names, so
DJGPP cannot support that on NT.  That section of the FAQ also points
to a experimental long-file-name driver for NT which you could try.
Long file names *are* supported on Windows 95 and 98.
