I'm only 13 and I understand memory addressing in DJGPP and this knowledge has been invaluable in my graphics programs. Saying something "memory in DJGGP is something you don't really need to know" is like saying "well, you can use the toaster, but you don't really need to know how to push the button or turn the dial".
