Allegro is great for this, and from what I remember (geez, its been ages since I've touched anything other than these damn university assignments) it supports plenty of cards, especially the sound blaster family (although you were looking for others, i know). Lots of demos have sources that use GUS, so try them out and as you have already been recommended, get PCGPE. If you decide to give up and use a professional sound library, excluding Allegro I would recommend SEAL, it supports lots of platforms including DJGPP. And with any luck I will have a DJGPP 16-bit sound blaster library out sometime this century if anyone ever agrees to test the 16-bit sound module for me (damn these new 16-bit sound cards that are built on SB Pro DSP chips!!!)
