Yeah, I knew that, but I stupidly thought you could invoke anything with BASH.
I now have a 32-bit protected mode form of vi that works good--vim.

I tried EMACS and learned the basics, but my objection NOW is simply that I
like to
work as much as possible "in the open" that is without an IDE. Later this
could change
1.) when I become quite skillful with C and
2.) when I get involved in a large and complex project
     then I may install it again and work through it.

I have two good Windows IDEs and I just don't feel comfortable working that
way.
But I have a relative who earns his living programming and he says "You'll
sure change your
mind about that real quick when you do it for money--you'll even learn to
like Visual Basic"
This is a paraphrase but it makes the point.
