This sounds like you are accessing uninitialized memory.

I don't think so.  The DPMI server is only asked to provide chunks of 
memory.  Everything else is done by library functions.

It could be, though, that there's some bug in your program which is 
sensitive to the particulars of the allocation scheme, like if the chunks 
are or aren't consecutive.
