Thanks for your technical notes and the -b switch tip. What is the technical term for what I have been looking at while these make compiles are going on? Is it possible to pipe the thing to a text file (gasp) so that it can be enjoyed later? Once it went like this: Wife: "What are you doing? Me: "Compiling" ["making" might be misinterpreted] What is that you are looking at on the screen? Me: "The compile record" [I just made that up.] Wife: "Have you lost your mind? Me: "I promise not to make a sound when I come to bed." I am serious about the piping idea because I want to do it with my own masterpieces. I realize that you would not be able to see the story as it unfolds, but this could be overcome by making twice, once on the screen and once piped to a text file. Don't you keep a record of your important compiles? Ralph
