Just a note regarding the 'Solution(?) to VERY ...':

In my example, I accidentally declared class A as:

class A {
public:
    A::A(char c);
    ...
private:
    B *workerB;
    static bool setup;
};

workerB should have also been static and declared in the cpp as:

B *A::workerB = 0;
