There's a real nice image viewer for djgpp (v1?) called display.  It reads
quite a lot of file formats, including gif.  Source code is freely
available (except ?peg/tiff libs i think).  The doc says the official site
is NCTUCCCA.edu.tw/PC/graphics/disp.
