Correction: Here is a makefile fragment, and its translation:

$(OBJDIR_NORMAL_LIB): $(OBJDIR) $(OBJS)
        -$(RM) $(OBJDIR_NORMAL_LIB)
        cd $(OBJDIR); $(AR_CR) $(NORMAL_LIB) $(OFILES)

(Notice that the second and third lines begin with tabs.)

This translates into:

ar lib.a xx1.o xx2.o .... xxN.o
ranlib lib.a
