     Thanks for all the help, but the problem turned out to be a typo.  In my
VBE_getmodeinfo(), the call to dosmemget had sizeof(modeinfo) instead of
sizeof(*modeinfo).  So (if I am understanding correctly) I was getting four
bytes instead of 256.  Amazing how much chaos a simple typo can cause.
Everything works much better now, except for high colour modes, but I think I
should leave that for a while.
