If you don't wish to use Allegro, or read a FAQ, try this.

#include <sys/nearptr.h>

char *video;
video = (char *)(0xa000 + __djgpp_conventional_base);

Use __djgpp_nearptr_enable() before accessing the video buffer.

Don't forget to use __djgpp_nearptr_disable() when you are done with the
buffer...
