Not true, at least for gcc 2.7.2 (the latest we have here at work).  Nor
is that a requirement of the ANSI C specification.

It will produce a warning (and change the type to 'int') for C++, but
that
does not yet have a specification which has been ratified by ANSI, so
it's
not meaningful to talk about "more ANSI compliance".
