There are two ways I noticed this is done:
- the double click is always preceded by a single click
  This has the drawback that the application must not do anything
  that can't be undone fast.
- specify a delay before the system decides what kind of click it is.
  This annoy the user with delays.

Perhaps best would be to have a sth. that gives out
3 kinds of messages for this:
Event		Time		Message
Mouseclick	T+0		MouseClick 
Mouseclick	T<DoubleCLickT	DoubleClick
TimerExpired	T=DoubleClickT  SingleClick
